The local labour market recognizes the need to introduce a new professional occupation in Široki Brijeg

On May 29, 2020, in the premises of the Borak Cinema Hall in Široki Brijeg, a presentation of the Feasibility Study for the introduction of the new profession ‘Technician for mechatronics’ in the Srednja strukovna škola (Secondary Vocational School) in Široki Brijeg in accordance with the needs of the labour market was held.

The presentation of the Study, which was done by the consultant Damir Kadribašić from Tešanj, was attended by more than 20 participants – representatives of the school, private sector, and the city administrations and educational authorities. Although extraordinary circumstances shifted the plan of activities, the need of the labour market was stated on the one hand i.e. the existence of material and technical conditions on the other hand, and the decision to enrol students in this profession for the first year was confirmed and the next steps were defined in accordance to this.

The economy of Široki Brijeg and the gravitating local communities have expressed its readiness to open its doors to future students for practical classes/holiday internships of the students, for teacher training, but also for equipping practical classrooms for targeted and related occupations.

The new occupation will enable students to acquire combined competencies in process automation, electrical engineering, electronics, mechanical engineering and computing. The school, with the support of the education authorities and the involvement of business representatives, will start adjusting 30% of the curriculum to be in line with the local labour market before the start of the new school year.

The intervention is carried out with the support of the Foundation Helvetas Moja Budućnost.
